The staff of Spence Restoration Nursery been working with the Indiana Crop Improvement Association for several years to supply Source Identified Indiana Genotype native seed. We have always maintained detailed records of the locations of all of our foundation seed collections. We have used these records along with site visits accompanied by Crop Improvement personnel to establish a database of source identified collection sites.
This database has been used to produce the first Source Identified Seed Labels from the Indiana Crop Improvement Association. We continue to work together to provide a greater diversity of Indiana Source Identified Seed.
This voluntary certification program assures that the proper identity of native grasses’ and forbs’ reproductive material is maintained through all phases of production. Reproductive material refers to seeds, seedlings, or transplants.
Source identified material is comprised of the unselected Indiana germplasm and is considered to be relatively genetically diverse. Spence Restoration Nursery’s Source Identified seed is produced on our seed nursery properties from plants produced from our certified foundation seed collection.
Source identified plants are those grown from our source identified seed. Source identified tags are available for many of our plant species.
